Carbon Footprint Consulting Service

The Athena Sustainable Materials Institute is offering a new carbon footprint consulting service in response to the growing need to address global warming

CHANGING LANDSCAPE – BUILDING INDUSTRY

The building industry is experiencing dramatic change. Architects and their clients are considering environmental impact and social responsibility as key factors when making building material and other design decisions. In response to growing environmental concerns, governments at all levels are pushing ahead with new green purchasing programs and consensus standards to address environmental impacts and, more specifically, carbon emissions emanating from building activity (e.g., the 2003 challenge, http://www.architecture2030.org/home.html Open in new window). Today more than ever it is essential to have the best possible carbon footprint estimates in order to make the best possible decisions.

EXPERIENCE

The Athena Sustainable Materials Institute and its affiliate, Athena Institute International, have been researching sustainability issues and developing life cycle assessment (LCA) databases and holistic tools for close to 20 years. More recently, we have completed LCA based carbon footprint analyses for various clients on infrastructure, building materials and whole buildings.

CARBON FOOTPRINT CONSULTING SERVICE

The Institute’s commitment is to follow ISO compliant methodologies to independently quantify or verify the carbon footprint of any North American building materials project or organization. We help our members and clients quantify their carbon footprint and then assist them in achieving carbon neutrality by :

  • identifying carbon "hotspots" and targeting internal conservation and efficiency opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and
  • providing guidance on choosing high quality offsets from the myriad of carbon offset programs and options.
