Help accelerate the transition to low-carbon, high-performance buildings.

There is no other organization currently working to solve critical technical problems that are impeding more effective use of LCA and embodied carbon policy. The risk of inaction is clear.

The Athena Sustainable Materials Institute is a Canadian non-profit dedicated to advancing life cycle assessment (LCA) science, tools, and policy for sustainable building materials and design.

Athena exists to provide public service that helps accelerate the transition to low-carbon, high-performance buildings. Through free software tools, high-quality datasets, research, education, and advocacy, Athena supports evidence-based decision-making in building design and materials selection.

The work isn’t done. We need external support to tackle tasks like these:

Methodology improvement: Embodied carbon is coming up big in standards, codes, and policy – our work is critical to making sure it’s done right and it’s feasible.

Free software: We provide free whole-building LCA tools so all sustainable building designers have access to life cycle assessment.

Capacity building: LCA literacy is not keeping up with market demand, which creates risk of errors and unintended consequences.
