Athena Institute welcomes Steven Kuan to the Board of Directors
The Athena Sustainable Materials Institute Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Steven Kuan as its newest member.
Dr. Kuan is replacing FPInnovations Board member Erol Karacabeyli, who felt his day-to-day activities were becoming distant from the Institute’s primary area of work. “On behalf of the Board I wish to thank Erol for his wisdom and guidance during his time on the Board. I am also very grateful for his help finding a most qualified individual as a replacement,” said Stephen Pope, Chair of the Athena Board.
Dr. Kuan is the Research Manager of the Advanced Building Systems Department at FPInnovations. He oversees a team of 25 scientists, technicians and support staff carrying out innovative research on sustainability, durability, serviceability, fire, and structural performance of wood construction.
Dr. Kuan is a civil engineer with particular expertise in seismic performance. His previous experience includes positions as Senior Seismic Engineer with the Buildings and Safety Standards Branch of the Government of British Columbia, and Acting Regional Manager and Senior Seismic Engineer with Public Works and Government Services Canada. He has a B.A.Sc., M. Eng. and Ph.D., all in civil engineering, from the University of British Columbia.
The Board is looking forward to working with Dr. Kuan, who is an enthusiastic supporter of LCA. “An ideal future state would be LCA as a commonly accepted standard requirement or step in any decision-making process,” said Dr. Kuan.
