Athena Institute develops a product naming system to support wbLCA

The Athena Institute is pleased to announce a new naming convention for construction products. Until now, there has not been a taxonomy for products sufficient to meet the needs of whole-building life cycle assessment (wbLCA).

Our system of universal product identifiers will greatly assist the advancement of wbLCA. Benefits include:

  • Ability to digitize bills of materials, for sharing across platforms and reducing the cost of assessments.
  • Better standardization of wbLCA practice, to improve reliability, comparability, and reproducibility.
  • Providing a key missing component for wbLCA results benchmarking.

The naming convention is built on an existing industry classification system (OmniClass) and was developed in consultation with a working group and reviewed by industry stakeholders. We are incorporating the nomenclature in our upcoming Athena Building LCA web app.
