Gypsum Association releases updated LCA report and EPD
The Athena Institute prepared an industry-average LCA report for North American ½” lightweight and 5/8” type X gypsum board, as well as an EPD for the 5/8” type X board. These documents were published in April 2020. They replace a previous LCA report (prepared by the Athena Institute) and a previous EPD.
The new documents reflect updated data from manufacturing plants and a new version of the underlying product category rules (PCR). The Athena Institute will include the updated product information in the next release of the Impact Estimator for Buildings LCA software tool.
The Gypsum Association will soon update the LCA and EPD for another product, glass mat gypsum panels, also prepared by the Athena Institute. The Athena Institute has been engaged for the update, expected to be published in 2021.
“We were pleased to work, once again, with Athena Sustainable Materials Institute on the timely release of this Industry Average Type III Environmental Product Declaration. Athena not only supports accurate data collection but also willingly assists the GA with LCA-related questions that inevitably arise over the course of any EPD’s or LCA’s valid period. We look forward to working with them again in the near future. The Gypsum Association (GA) and its member companies are committed to transparently reporting the environmental impacts of gypsum panel products, which are among the most commonly used building materials in North America. Our recently revised and updated LCA and EPD for type X gypsum wallboard reflects gypsum industry efforts to contribute to more sustainable buildings.”
